[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Seoul – Following recent cases in Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon, police have confirmed that a similar mobile micropayment fraud attempt targeting a KT subscriber occurred in Yeongdeungpo District last month.

According to the Yeongdeungpo Police Station, on August 6 at around 2:00 p.m., a KT customer reported that KRW 495,000 had been withdrawn through unauthorized gift card purchases via mobile phone billing. The victim immediately canceled the transactions and successfully recovered the full amount.

Police launched an investigation but were unable to identify a suspect, and the case was closed earlier this month.

This follows a series of incidents in Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon, where between August 26 and early September, KT users reported repeated unauthorized micropayments. Authorities confirmed that across 74 separate cases, a total of KRW 45.8 million (USD 33,000) was fraudulently charged. These cases are currently under investigation by the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency.

Investigators stated that they will examine potential similarities and links between the Yeongdeungpo case and the ongoing incidents in Gwangmyeong and Geumcheon.
