[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Paul Lee] Hyundai Steel is planning to produce electric steel plates for electric motors for electric vehicles.

According to the industry on the 10th, Hyundai Steel has recently decided to build an electric steel plate production facility for electric motors and started designing it. Ahn Dong-il, president of the company, has been reviewed for execution and even the execution budget has been allocated.

It recently signed a contract with an electric steel sheet production equipment company with the aim of installation and trial operation in June 2024.

Currently, only POSCO produces electric steel plates for eco-friendly vehicles in Korea. The importance of electric steel plates, which have a direct impact on the efficiency of electric vehicle driving parts, is emerging with the spread of electric vehicles.

It is significant that such core components are supplied directly from Hyundai Steel. This is because synergy is expected to be created with Hyundai Motor Group, which has recently expanded its production capacity of electric vehicles in South Korea.

Kia Motors decided to start construction of Autoland Hwaseong, an electric vehicle-only plant in Korea last month, and Hyundai Motors decided to start construction of an electric vehicle-only plant in Ulsan within this year. The electric vehicle-only plant, which will be built in Ulsan, will begin mass production in the second half of 2025 and secure production capacity of up to 150,000 units per year. It also expressed its ambition to produce 1.51 million units of Hyundai Motor Group in Korea by 2030 to make Korea a "Mega Factory," a key production hub for electric vehicles.

Both Kia and Hyundai Motor's electric vehicle-only plants are scheduled to begin operation in the second half of 2025, when Hyundai Steel's electric steel plates are also expected to stabilize.
