[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] The first trial of Kim Dong-hwan, CEO of Binggrae, who is accused of assaulting a police officer while intoxicated, has concluded. The prosecution has sought a six-month prison sentence with a one-year probation for Kim.
On the 15th, during the first hearing of Kim Dong-hwan's case regarding obstruction of justice at the Seoul Western District Court, Judge Seong Jun-kyu was requested by the prosecution to impose a six-month prison sentence and a one-year probation. The sentencing hearing is set for next month, on the 7th. Kim has been indicted for assaulting a police officer who was dispatched following a resident's report of a disturbance caused by his intoxication on June 17 at an apartment complex in Yongsan, Seoul.
During the hearing, Kim's defense attorney stated, "The defendant reflects on his actions, acknowledging that he consumed alcohol to the point where he could not control himself, leading to this incident. He is committed to ensuring that such an unfortunate incident does not occur again." They requested leniency, citing his lack of prior convictions, the impulsive nature of the incident due to intoxication, his sincere apology to the victim, and the victim’s desire not to impose punishment on him.
In his closing statement, Kim Dong-hwan expressed, "I have nothing but remorse regarding this incident. I would like to once again apologize to the police officer whom I inconvenienced at that time. There has not been a day I haven’t regretted this. I will be careful in my future conduct and live with the mindset of serving the country and society. I humbly ask for leniency."
Kim Dong-hwan, the eldest son of Kim Ho-yeon, chairman of Binggrae Group, was promoted to CEO of Binggrae in March of this year. However, just three months after his appointment, he has found himself embroiled in controversy, potentially jeopardizing the anticipated succession within the group.
