[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Despite a decline in the U.S. stock market during the first quarter of 2025, Korea’s National Pension Service (NPS) continued to pursue a buy-the-dip strategy, significantly increasing its holdings in major technology stocks, including the so-called “Magnificent Seven” (M7).
According to a 13F filing disclosed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on May 14, NPS’s total U.S. equity investment amounted to $104 billion in Q1 2025, slightly down from $105.6 billion in the previous quarter.
NPS’s largest net purchase was Apple, acquiring an additional 1.5 million shares valued at approximately $333.2 million. However, due to a decline in Apple’s stock price, its portfolio weighting fell marginally from 6.42% to 6.1%.
Other notable purchases include:
Microsoft: 547,254 shares (~$205.4 million)
NVIDIA: 1,651,228 shares (~$178.9 million)
Amazon: 875,991 shares (~$166.6 million)
Meta Platforms: 176,627 shares (~$101.8 million)
Alphabet (Google): 367,241 shares (~$56.8 million)
Tesla: 172,845 shares (~$44.8 million)
In addition to the M7 stocks, NPS also increased its stake in Palantir Technologies, purchasing 262,410 shares (~$22.1 million) after the stock fell 40.7% from its February peak to $84.40 as of March 31.
Netflix was newly added to the portfolio, with 19,397 shares (~$18.1 million) purchased, following its strong earnings in Q4 2024.
NPS also raised its stake in Berkshire Hathaway, buying 98,263 shares (~$52.3 million) and increasing its ownership from 0.98% to 1.22%.
Furthermore, NPS newly added four U.S. stocks to its holdings, including Robinhood Markets and Interactive Brokers, while exiting 14 positions, including AES and Cooper Companies. The pension fund also reduced its stake in 115 other holdings.
With this continued focus on long-term tech investments, NPS reaffirms its strategic approach to value investing in the global equity markets.
