[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, South Korea – June 12, 2025 — Samsung Electronics' Device Solutions (DS) Division, which oversees the company’s semiconductor business, announced on Wednesday that it will require prior approval for the use of ChatGPT, citing security concerns related to external generative AI platforms.

According to internal sources, DS employees were previously allowed to use ChatGPT freely. However, starting June 16, only AI developers who receive executive-level approval will be permitted to access ChatGPT under the new internal guidelines.

The decision reflects growing concerns that sensitive or classified information could be exposed when using externally hosted AI tools.

“Because ChatGPT runs on external servers, there are potential security risks for divisions like DS that handle highly confidential data,” a Samsung spokesperson said. “Employees are instead encouraged to use Samsung’s internally developed generative AI tools, which are fully accessible within the company.”

Samsung has already banned the use of ChatGPT within its DX (Device Experience) Division since 2023, replacing it with its proprietary generative AI model, Gauss. The DS Division is expected to follow a similar path, with employees permitted to use internal AI solutions without restriction.

Samsung Electronics’ latest policy aligns with broader industry trends, as major tech and semiconductor firms tighten internal controls on generative AI usage due to growing concerns over data security and intellectual property leakage.
