[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Hyundai Motor Company and Kia sold a combined total of 89,890 vehicles in the European market last month, representing a 1.8% decrease compared to the same period last year.
Amid a 0.3% decline in the overall European passenger car market during the same period, the two brands’ market share also dipped slightly by 0.2 percentage points to 8.3%.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) on May 27, Hyundai sold 45,227 units, down 3.3% year-over-year, while Kia performed relatively well with 44,663 units sold, a modest 0.2% decrease.
In terms of market share, Hyundai held 4.2%, down 0.1 percentage points, whereas Kia maintained its 4.1% share.
Hyundai’s bestselling model, the Tucson, sold 9,135 units, including 4,164 hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and 1,890 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV).
The Kona recorded total sales of 6,360 units, with HEVs accounting for 2,900 units and battery electric vehicles (EV) for 2,171 units. The compact i10 also saw sales of 5,353 units.
Kia’s top-selling model was the Sportage with 12,634 units, followed by the compact hatchback Ceed at 8,795 units. Notably, the newly launched EV3 attracted attention in the eco-friendly vehicle market, selling 5,551 units.
Combined sales of Hyundai’s eco-friendly models included 6,054 units of Tucson HEV and PHEV, and 5,071 units of Kona HEV and EV.
Additional Hyundai eco models sold included 2,446 units of the Casper Electric (Instar) and 1,387 units of the Ioniq 5. Kia’s lineup featured 4,189 units of the Niro (HEV, PHEV, EV) and 1,441 units of the EV6.
For the cumulative January-April period this year, Hyundai and Kia sold a total of 357,201 vehicles, down 3.4% from the previous year. Hyundai accounted for 174,106 units (-4.2%), and Kia for 183,095 units (-2.6%).
During the same period, the overall European market declined by 0.4% to 4,459,087 units, resulting in a combined market share of 8.0% for Hyundai and Kia, down 0.3 percentage points.
