[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] BYD, a major Chinese automaker focusing on new energy cars such as electric vehicles (EVs), escaped from sluggish sales earlier this year.
BYD said on the 1st that it sold 301,114 pure electric vehicles worldwide in the first quarter of this year. This is an increase of 13% compared to the same period last year.
The BYD, which Warren Buffett invested in, beat Tesla in the fourth quarter of last year and ranked first in global electric vehicle sales.
BYD sold 526,409 pure electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of last year, surpassing Tesla, which sold only 484,507 units for the first time in quarterly sales.
Sales of new energy vehicles, including BYD's electric vehicles and plug-ins, reached 626,263 units in the first quarter, up 13 percent from a year earlier.
Sales of new energy vehicles fell in January and February this year but jumped 46 percent in March.
Exports also rose sharply in March, nearly tripling overseas sales of new energy vehicles to 38,434 units.
