[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Before the recent server hacking incident at SK Telecom, SK Group's U.S. subsidiary, SK Americas, was also reportedly targeted by a ransomware cyberattack. However, the group responded promptly and confirmed that no critical information was leaked.

According to sources in the security and business sectors, SK Americas, established as the North American cooperation hub for SK Group last year, was attacked by a ransomware group called "Qilin" at the end of March. Ransomware is a type of cyberattack where hackers demand payment, often in Bitcoin, threatening to release stolen data if the ransom is not paid.

The attack targeted the servers of SK Americas' New York office. The hackers behind the attack claimed on the dark web that they had stolen 1 terabyte (TB) of data from SK Group’s servers.

They issued a 48-hour deadline for the company to meet their demands, warning that they would release the stolen data if their conditions were not met. However, no data samples were released, and after the deadline passed, there was no evidence of further data leaks or additional attacks.

SK Group has assured that there was no significant information leakage as a result of the attack and that the situation has been contained.
