[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, April 22, 2025 – SK Telecom has launched an immediate response after detecting signs of a potential data breach involving customer information, stemming from a cyberattack on its internal systems.
According to industry sources, the breach occurred on April 19 at approximately 11:00 p.m., during which a portion of subscriber information related to SIM cards may have been leaked. The exact cause, scope, and types of data compromised are still under investigation.
The company has notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) about the incident and the preliminary findings. So far, there have been no confirmed cases of the leaked information being misused.
Upon recognizing the potential breach, SK Telecom promptly deleted the detected malware and isolated the affected systems suspected of being compromised in the attack.
As a preventative measure to protect customers, the company has initiated a full-scale inspection of all systems. It is also enhancing controls to block unauthorized SIM swaps and abnormal authentication attempts. When signs of potential misuse are detected, the company will immediately suspend related services and issue alerts to affected users.
Additionally, SK Telecom is offering a free "SIM Protection Service" for customers seeking extra safeguards. The service can be activated via the company’s official website or through the T World mobile app.
SK Telecom emphasized its commitment to improving its security framework and stated, “We sincerely apologize for the concern this incident may have caused and will do everything possible to prevent any recurrence.”
