[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] South Korean police recently questioned Choi Eun-soon, mother-in-law of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, on allegations of illegally leasing farmland.

According to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Unit of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency on May 26, Choi was summoned and investigated as a suspect on May 7 for alleged violations of the Farmland Act.

Choi is accused of illegally leasing two plots of farmland totaling approximately 3,300 square meters in Yangpyeong-eup, Yangpyeong County, from 2021 to 2023. Although she has owned the land since 2005, she reportedly did not cultivate it herself.

Police previously investigated Choi in 2023 on allegations of acquiring farmland for speculative real estate purposes. However, that case was closed without charges due to the expiration of the five-year statute of limitations.

Following a complaint filed by a civic group, police launched a new investigation into the alleged illegal lease of the farmland. A police official stated, “The case is still under investigation, and we cannot disclose further details at this time.”
