[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SK Telecom has admitted responsibility for the recent SIM card information hacking incident but expressed reluctance to waive early termination fees for affected customers.
The company argues that waiving such fees could lead to the defection of 2.5 to 5 million users and result in over 7 trillion KRW (approx. USD 5.1 billion) in losses over the next three years.
During a hearing of the National Assembly’s Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, CEO Yoo Young-sang stated, “We will swiftly establish a Customer Trust Recovery Committee to listen to customer voices and implement strong consumer protection measures.”
The company plans to launch the committee within one to two weeks and will consider various compensation options, including possible early termination fee waivers.
Ryu Jung-hwan, Executive Vice President and Head of the Network Infrastructure Center at SK Telecom (017670), added during a briefing on May 11, “The Customer Trust Recovery Committee will include not only internal members but also external experts. We’re currently listing potential members and gathering their acceptance, which may take time, but we aim to proceed as quickly as possible.”
