[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Samsung C&T, accelerating its expansion into the European small modular reactor (SMR) market, including Romania and Sweden, has now joined Estonia's SMR project.
According to Samsung C&T’s construction division on Wednesday, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Estonia’s private nuclear power firm, Fermi Energia, during the "Energy Mission Conference" held at the Estonia Business Hub in Seoul Square. The agreement aims to collaborate on the development of SMRs in Estonia.
Fermi Energia was established in 2019 by local energy and nuclear experts to lead Estonia’s SMR construction efforts. In February last year, the company identified two potential sites approximately 100 km east of the capital, Tallinn, where it plans to introduce the BWRX-300, a 300MW small modular reactor based on an upgraded version of the boiling water reactor (BWR).
Under the agreement, Samsung C&T will be involved in the early stages of the project, including establishing the business structure, cost estimation, and site evaluation. The company will participate from the preliminary engineering design (Pre-FEED) phase to the front-end engineering design (FEED) phase, contributing to the foundational stages of SMR construction.
