[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 22nd, Nikkei reported that Amazon Japan will start an online prescription drug sales service by the end of the year in collaboration with Welcia Holdings, Japan's largest pharmacy chain.

The service will allow customers to upload their prescriptions, issued after a medical consultation, to the Amazon app. Amazon will then coordinate with pharmacy chains to deliver the prescription drugs to the customer's doorstep.

Pharmacies such as Welcia will handle the guidance on how to use the medications and any necessary precautions, while Amazon will be responsible for delivering the prescriptions. Amazon will not need to maintain inventory or manage returns, reducing logistical burdens.

This service is expected to save patients the trouble of visiting medical institutions or pharmacies, as well as save time. According to Nikkei, the price patients will pay, excluding delivery fees, is expected to be similar to current prices.
