[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Samsung Electronics has concluded its wage negotiations with labor unions, but membership in its largest union has declined significantly following the agreement.

According to industry data on May 28, the membership of the Samsung Group-wide union (Samsung branch) fell to approximately 69,575 as of 10 a.m., down by more than 6,000 from its peak of around 76,000 during the negotiation process.

The union had secured majority status and legal representation rights from the Ministry of Employment and Labor in April. To maintain this status, it must retain membership at roughly half of the company’s workforce, estimated at around 64,500 members.

Amid rising withdrawals, particularly from the Device eXperience (DX) division, the union plans to restructure its organization by separating representation for the Device Solutions (DS) semiconductor division and the DX division. The move is intended to better reflect the differing interests of each business unit.

The decline in membership highlights ongoing internal tensions despite the formal conclusion of wage negotiations, raising questions about the union’s ability to maintain its majority status going forward.
