[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] A strike by ready-mix concrete transport workers in the Seoul metropolitan area is expected to continue after a tentative agreement on transport fees was rejected by union members.

According to the Korea Ready-Mix Concrete Transport Workers Union, 68.3% of participating members voted against the proposed deal, leading to its rejection.

The tentative agreement included a 5.5% increase in transport fees—about 4,200 won per trip—bringing the per-trip rate to around 80,000 won. However, the union had originally demanded an increase of 8,000 won per trip, and members reportedly found the proposed raise insufficient.

The union said the demand reflects rising costs, including inflation and vehicle maintenance expenses, as well as relatively lower transport rates in the capital region compared to other areas. It added that the strike will continue until a final agreement is reached.

Following the rejection, the work stoppage that began at 8 a.m. on June 8 is expected to persist, raising concerns over disruptions at construction sites across the metropolitan area.

Industry observers warn that a prolonged strike could delay major projects, including critical semiconductor plant construction, if supply of ready-mix concrete remains disrupted.
