[Alpha Biz= Lee Joonhyun] SEOUL, June 8 — Samsung Electronics has internally decided to scrap its plan to enter the silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductor foundry business, according to industry sources.

The company’s Device Solutions (DS) division is instead expected to focus on product design and development rather than contract manufacturing in the SiC segment.

A source familiar with the matter said Samsung concluded the business lacked sufficient profitability despite earlier discussions, including external encouragement to expand into the sector.

Samsung has previously entered and exited the power semiconductor business multiple times, reportedly due to weak returns.

The company, however, denied any full withdrawal from the sector, stating it continues to develop power semiconductor products.

Industry observers note that the SiC foundry business remains challenging without strong government support, raising concerns over long-term viability.
