[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] As the Trump administration’s trade war with China escalates, signs of rising nationalism and anti-American sentiment are spreading across the country, reflecting the growing tension between the two global superpowers.
On Friday, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that some Chinese small business owners have begun to respond to the situation by displaying discriminatory notices against American customers or voluntarily halting the sale of U.S. imports.
A viral image circulating on Chinese social media shows a notice posted at a meat restaurant in Wuhan, reading: “Customers with U.S. citizenship must pay an additional 104% service charge. If you have questions, please contact the U.S. Embassy.”
This symbolic act reflects the broader trade standoff, in which the U.S. and China are locked in a tit-for-tat “chicken game.” Each time President Donald Trump raises tariffs on Chinese goods, China retaliates by imposing equivalent tariffs on U.S. imports.
SCMP noted that online reactions in China are divided. One internet user criticized the approach, arguing, “This kind of response is counterproductive. We should offer discounts to attract Americans, so they buy more Chinese products and spend money here.”
On the other hand, some are embracing patriotic business decisions. A Chinese shoe manufacturer drew widespread attention after posting a video on Douyin (China’s TikTok) announcing he would no longer do business with American partners. Speaking to his 800,000 followers, he declared, “Even if I take a financial loss, I will stop exporting to the U.S. Patriotism is more important than making money.”
