[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Pearl Abyss has announced the termination of its Black Desert Mobile service in China, roughly three years after its launch in the market.
On the 27th, Pearl Abyss disclosed that its publishing agreement with Tencent, signed in 2019 for the distribution of Black Desert Mobile in China, will end early on January 27, 2025. The original contract with Tencent was valued at approximately 36.7 billion KRW. Pearl Abyss stated, “With the conclusion of the service agreement with Tencent, the Black Desert Mobile service in China will be terminated early next year.”
Launched in 2018, Black Desert Mobile is a mobile adaptation of the MMORPG Black Desert. After receiving the green light (known as a panhao) for game service in China in April 2022, the game initially attracted significant attention. However, user attrition led to a lackluster performance in the market.
Meanwhile, Pearl Abyss plans to continue operating the PC version of Black Desert in China. A company representative commented, “The PC version of Black Desert, now in its fourth week since launch in China, is performing well and maintains a recommendation rate in the high 70% range on Tencent's WeGame platform. Leveraging our operational experience, we are prioritizing steady user growth over hasty expansion.”
