[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, said the company will take a comprehensive approach in determining the location of its next semiconductor plant, leaving open the possibility of both domestic and overseas sites.

Speaking to reporters on June 10 after attending a Nikkei Forum “Korea-Japan Special Session” held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Chey addressed questions about the next plant following the completion of the fourth facility at the Yongin semiconductor cluster.

“Semiconductor demand continues to grow, so we cannot avoid expanding somewhere,” he said. “Preparing for the next step is becoming a key task.”

Chey also acknowledged the possibility of overseas expansion, stating, “If it cannot be done in Korea, we may have to consider building it abroad. It may not necessarily be limited to Korea.”

He emphasized that large-scale infrastructure is essential for semiconductor plant construction. “For a factory to be built, everything must be in place—power, land, workforce, and water,” he said, adding that site selection would require balancing market conditions and stakeholder demands.

His remarks come as political discussions in South Korea have recently raised the possibility of expanding semiconductor investments by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix into regions such as Honam and Chungcheong.

However, both companies have maintained that no decisions have been finalized regarding potential regional investments or discussions with the government.
