[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Police have launched a formal investigation into LG Uplus over allegations that the company attempted to conceal a potential hacking incident.

According to reports on April 2, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit conducted a search and seizure at LG Uplus’s Magok headquarters in Seoul in mid-March. Investigators reportedly secured servers, system data, and records related to operating system (OS) reinstallation from the company’s integrated control center.

The raid comes about three months after the Ministry of Science and ICT referred the case to police in December on suspicion of obstruction of official duties by deception.

Authorities are examining whether LG Uplus deleted or reset log records while reinstalling server operating systems, potentially hindering the investigation into a suspected data breach.

Previously, a joint public-private investigation team led by the ministry stated that while data leakage from LG Uplus’s internal network had been confirmed, the probe was impeded because relevant servers had been reinstalled or discarded.

LG Uplus has denied the allegations, stating that no evidence of hacking was found on its servers. The company also said it had preserved duplicated server data from before and after the OS reinstallation, allowing for forensic analysis.

Police declined to comment further, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
