[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] One of the three workers critically injured in a gas exposure incident at POSCO’s Pohang Steelworks last month has died.
According to the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency on the 15th, a contractor employee in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, who had been receiving hospital treatment after inhaling toxic gas at the steelworks, passed away on the same day.
The incident occurred on November 20 at the STS (stainless steel) No. 4 Steelmaking Plant, where Mr. A and two other contractor employees were cleaning sludge. A 40-year-old POSCO employee on site also suffered critical gas exposure. In addition, three POSCO fire brigade disaster response team members who arrived for the rescue were injured after inhaling the hazardous gas during the operation.
Among the three critically injured workers, the two others have shown improvement in their condition. The three POSCO disaster response team members reportedly recovered quickly.
In connection with the incident, the Gyeongbuk Police Agency’s Serious Accident Investigation Team, together with the Pohang branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, conducted searches on the same day at POSCO headquarters, the Pohang Steelworks facilities, and the offices of the contracting company.
