[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] A fatal workplace accident has occurred at an overseas project site operated by KEPCO KPS Co., Ltd. in India.

According to KEPCO KPS and related sources on March 18, a 55-year-old team leader, identified by his surname A, died the previous afternoon (local time) while inspecting boiler equipment at the company’s project site in Bhavnagar, Gujarat.

The victim is believed to have been buried when a pile of ash collapsed while he was inspecting the interior of a hopper used to store ash generated from coal combustion.

KEPCO KPS has dispatched personnel to the site and is currently investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, including whether the employee had been working alone at the time.

The company has been operating and maintaining a thermal power plant in Bhavnagar since 2014 under a 15-year contract with a state-owned enterprise under the Gujarat government.

While KEPCO KPS had previously secured power plant maintenance projects in other regions of India, including Jharsuguda and Chandria, it is understood that only the Bhavnagar site remains in operation.

At the Bhavnagar site, approximately four to five KEPCO KPS employees have been working in managerial roles, including overseeing technology transfer.

This marks the second fatal industrial accident at a KEPCO KPS workplace. In June last year, a subcontractor employee died after being caught in machinery during cutting operations at the company’s Taean Thermal Power Plant site in South Korea.

Following that incident, the government and labor groups formed a joint safety consultative body to discuss measures to prevent recurrence.
