[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] A fatal accident occurred at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje shipyard, where a foreign inspector affiliated with a shipowner’s company fell into the sea and died.
According to the shipbuilding industry on September 3, Changwon Coast Guard received a report at 11:56 a.m. that a worker had fallen into the water from a vessel under construction at Hanwha Ocean’s Geoje yard in Gyeongnam Province.
The Coast Guard dispatched rescue teams and located the victim, a man in his 30s of Brazilian nationality, at 1:27 p.m. in a state of cardiac arrest. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead.
The victim, identified as “A,” was an inspector from the Brazilian shipowner overseeing testing facilities for a 150,000-ton offshore plant vessel scheduled to be delivered by Hanwha Ocean. Preliminary findings suggest that while conducting load tests and facility inspections, a structural component gave way, causing him to fall into the sea.
The Changwon Coast Guard is currently investigating the exact cause of the incident. Meanwhile, the Tongyeong branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor has dispatched labor inspectors to determine whether A, a foreign national and not an employee of Hanwha Ocean, falls under the category of “workers” as defined by Korea’s Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
