[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) announced today that 26 major companies in South Korea, including Hyundai Motor, POSCO, and GS Caltex, will receive a total of 190 billion KRW in government support for their artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives, designated as "AI Autonomous Manufacturing Leading Projects."
During a signing ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt Seoul, chaired by Minister An Duk-geun on the 28th, MOTIE revealed the companies selected for support, which include Hyundai Motor, GS Caltex, Samsung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, POSCO, EcoPro, Korean Air, and Jeju Samdasoo.
The "AI Autonomous Manufacturing" concept promoted by the ministry integrates AI with robotics and equipment in manufacturing processes to enhance and automate production.
To facilitate the expansion of AI utilization in enterprises, the ministry plans to designate 26 "leading projects" this year, providing up to 10 billion KRW for each project, with a goal of increasing the total number of leading projects to 200 by 2027.
Hyundai Motor plans to establish a flexible production system that can produce multiple vehicle types on a single production line by using AI and robotics to adjust logistics and production paths in real-time based on demand.
GS Caltex aims to analyze and control key variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow in real-time using AI, while also reducing carbon emissions, which contributed to its selection as a leading project.
POSCO intends to introduce AI autonomous manufacturing in high-risk facilities such as smelting and rolling processes to ensure worker safety and improve product quality.
Jeju Samdasoo, which inspects 4.5 billion tangerines annually and selects over 800 million as "imperfect produce" for fruit juice, plans to implement a system that uses machine vision AI to sort low-quality fruit with robots and automatically package the juice concentrate.
Kolon is also leveraging AI in its textile operations to monitor and control equipment status and quality in real-time, while pursuing process automation through unmanned logistics systems.
