KT Transfers 4,000 Employees to Subsidiaries Amid Union Opposition

[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 16th, industry sources reported that KT held a board meeting the previous day and approved the establishment of two new subsidiaries, KT OSP and KT P&M (tentative name).


KT plans to transfer employees to these newly formed subsidiaries and will offer voluntary retirement for those who do not wish to make the transition. For KT OSP, 3,400 employees, or 77% of the 4,400 employees currently in related positions, will be selected for transfer. For KT P&M, 380 employees, or 90% of the 420 workers handling similar tasks, will also be moved. This means that around 4,000 headquarters employees will be transitioned to the subsidiaries.

Employees with more than 10 years of service will receive 70% of KT's base salary upon transfer, with two-thirds of the difference between their previous salary and the base salary paid as a lump sum, considering the remaining years until retirement. For those with less than 10 years of service, their salaries will be maintained at 100% of the base salary due to lower compensation levels.

KT has conducted large-scale restructuring every time an external CEO took office. When former CEOs Lee Seok-chae and Hwang Chang-kyu were appointed, approximately 5,000 and 8,000 employees, respectively, left the company.

As of the end of June, KT had 19,370 headquarters employees, nearly double the number at SK Telecom (8,294) and LG Uplus (10,627). Following this organizational restructuring, the number of employees at KT's headquarters is expected to decrease to the mid-15,000 range. Even with the addition of 1,000 AI specialists currently being hired, the overall size of the organization will be significantly reduced compared to before.
