[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SPC Group has uncovered 26 safety flaws in conveyor systems across its affiliates’ factories following an emergency inspection prompted by a recent fatal workplace accident.
According to materials submitted by SPC to lawmaker Kim So-hee of the People Power Party on July 15, the group conducted a three-day emergency safety audit from May 19 to 21 across 24 production centers. The inspection focused on 47 spiral cooling conveyors — the same model involved in the fatal accident.
By affiliate, SPL had the highest number of machines inspected (20 units), followed by SPC Samlip with 11 (including 8 at the site of the accident in Siwha), BKR (10), Paris Croissant (3), Shany (2), and Honam Shany (1).
The inspection revealed 26 deficiencies, including entry points on equipment used by maintenance teams, movable safety fences, and access hatches wider than 30 cm, which could allow worker intrusion. SPC responded by reinforcing safety measures — installing locks, sealing access points, and enhancing machine guarding systems.
Some openings were larger than 30 cm or located near stairs and platforms, raising the risk of worker entry. SPC sealed these areas and reinforced parts of the equipment where worker contact was possible.
Additionally, since interlock safety devices were installed only at entry doors — not inside enclosed conveyor spaces — SPC added emergency stop mechanisms and upgraded the interlock systems so machines would halt automatically if safety barriers were removed.
