[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL – The global phenomenon “K-Pop Demon Hunters” has officially become Netflix’s most-watched original animated film, the streaming giant announced on July 30.
According to Netflix’s global social media account, the film, released on June 20, has accumulated an astounding 220.8 million viewing hours. Based on its runtime, that translates to 132.4 million views, putting it at the top of Netflix’s all-time animation charts.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation (the studio behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse), the film follows K-pop idol group HUNTRIX as they battle evil spirits and “protect the world through music.”
The movie has captivated viewers with its vivid Korean cultural elements — from Namsan Seoul Tower and the Seoul subway to traditional hanok houses, grim reapers, gimbap, herbal medicine, and jjimjilbangs (Korean saunas).
Directed by Maggie Kang, a Korean-Canadian filmmaker, the production also featured extensive Korean creative involvement throughout the staff and design teams.
The milestone cements K-Pop Demon Hunters as not only a streaming sensation but also a major moment for Korean culture in global animation.
