[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] LS Electric has secured a supply contract for ultra-high voltage direct current (HVDC) transformers worth approximately 500 billion KRW.

According to industry sources on the 24th, LS Electric is set to sign a contract this week with a joint venture between Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and General Electric (GE), named KAPES, for the supply of HVDC ultra-high voltage transformer equipment for the "East Coast and Seoul Metropolitan HVDC Transmission Line Construction" project. The contract is valued at 500 billion KRW, which accounts for 11.8% of the company's sales last year, amounting to approximately 4.23 trillion KRW.

LS Electric is the only company in South Korea capable of producing HVDC ultra-high voltage transformers. Recognizing the potential growth in the HVDC transformer business, the company established a dedicated plant in Busan in 2011, becoming the first to do so in the country.

As the importance of power grid efficiency increases, HVDC technology is gaining attention. HVDC (high voltage direct current) converts power transmission from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC), which allows for long-distance, high-capacity transmission with over 10% higher power efficiency compared to AC systems.
