[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] According to Nikkei on the 3rd, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has discovered misconduct involving Toyota, Mazda, Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki, five companies in total.

On the 4th, MLIT plans to conduct on-site inspections at Toyota under the Road Transport Vehicle Act. The remaining four companies will also undergo inspections sequentially.

Following the discovery of irregularities, MLIT has instructed Toyota, Mazda, and Yamaha to halt shipments of their current production of six vehicle models until their compliance with safety and other standards can be verified.

Toyota announced on the 3rd that inappropriate conduct was found in the certification tests of a total of seven vehicle models, including Yaris Cross and Crown. Production and sales of three vehicle models, including Corolla Fielder, currently in production, will be temporarily suspended.

As of the end of May, MLIT has completed investigations into 68 out of 85 companies requested for internal investigations regarding misconduct. The remaining 17 companies, including Toyota, are continuing their investigations.

Nikkei reported that "the Japanese government views the successive discoveries of misconduct in other leading Japanese automakers as serious and deems on-site inspections of each company necessary." MLIT is said to be discussing measures to prevent recurrences of certification irregularities, including strengthening examinations, audits, and early detection of irregularities.
