[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hansol Paper Co. has suspended all operations at its Shintanjin mill in Daejeon following a fatal workplace accident involving a newly hired employee.
According to a regulatory filing on July 21, the company announced a full suspension of production at the site, with operations scheduled to resume on August 1.
The incident occurred on July 16 at approximately 3:40 p.m., when a new employee (identified as Mr. A) fatally fell into a wastepaper input chute. Initial investigations suggest the employee failed to notice the roughly 30-centimeter opening while transporting wastepaper. He was reported missing and later found deceased inside the machinery in the early hours of the following day.
In an official statement, Hansol Paper expressed its condolences:
"We extend our deepest sympathies to the deceased and their family. Hansol Paper will take every possible measure to overhaul our safety management system and prevent such tragedies from happening again."
Labor unions have strongly condemned the accident, classifying it as a “serious industrial disaster” and citing lapses in workplace safety management.
The Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Office is currently conducting a thorough investigation into potential violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.
