[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Toyota Motor plans to accelerate its push into the Indian market by constructing three new vehicle manufacturing plants, aiming to expand its production capacity to around 1 million units annually by the 2030s.

According to Nikkei on May 2, the target represents roughly a threefold increase from Toyota’s current production level in India.

The new facilities will be located in Maharashtra in western India, home to Mumbai Port. One plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2029, while the remaining two are expected to come online in the 2030s. Total investment is estimated at approximately JPY 300 billion (about KRW 2.8 trillion).

Toyota is also considering using the new plants as export bases for markets in the Middle East and Africa. A company executive said these regions, particularly for compact vehicles, are well aligned with Toyota’s product lineup, adding that the company will implement a tailored regional strategy.

Currently, Toyota operates three plants in southern India, primarily producing vehicles for the domestic market.

India, the world’s third-largest automotive market after China and the United States, is widely regarded as a key growth hub with significant long-term production potential.
