[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong maintained his position as the top dividend earner in South Korea last year, receiving KRW 346.5 billion. Meanwhile, his mother, former Leeum Museum Director Hong Ra-hee, along with his sisters—Hotel Shilla CEO Lee Boo-jin and Samsung C&T Advisor Lee Seo-hyun—saw their dividend income decrease.
Hyundai Motor Group Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo and Chairman Chung Eui-sun secured the second and third spots, respectively, with their dividend earnings increasing by 7.4% and 11.7%. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won climbed to seventh place with a 40% surge in dividends, boosted by SK Hynix's performance.
According to Leaders Index on Tuesday, a survey of 560 companies that had announced cash and stock dividends as of the 14th revealed that Chairman Lee Jae-yong topped individual dividend earnings. He received KRW 346.5 billion in dividends last year, up KRW 22.8 billion from KRW 323.7 billion the previous year.
Honorary Chairman Chung Mong-koo ranked second with KRW 189.2 billion, an increase of KRW 13.1 billion from the year before. His son, Chairman Chung Eui-sun, placed third, receiving KRW 174.7 billion—up KRW 18.3 billion—thanks to increased dividends from group affiliates.
Samsung's three leading female figures followed in the rankings. Eldest daughter Lee Boo-jin earned KRW 148.3 billion, down KRW 12.8 billion from the previous year. Former Leeum Museum Director Hong Ra-hee collected KRW 146.7 billion, a decrease of KRW 27.6 billion. Youngest daughter Lee Seo-hyun received KRW 114.5 billion, KRW 8.2 billion less than the prior year. Their reduced dividends are attributed to the sale of some shares to cover inheritance taxes.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won ranked seventh with KRW 91 billion, up 40% from KRW 65 billion the previous year. LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo retained the eighth spot with KRW 77.8 billion, unchanged from the prior year.
Asan Foundation Chairman Chung Mong-joon secured ninth place with KRW 75.6 billion, down KRW 2.1 billion. DB Group Chairman Kim Nam-ho rounded out the top ten with KRW 43.9 billion, increasing by KRW 9.5 billion year-on-year.
