[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] According to the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA) on the 28th, it was revealed that from January to April of this year, SUVs outsold sedans in the imported car market. During this period, the sales of imported SUVs reached 38,844 units, marking a 6.3% increase compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, imported sedan sales recorded 34,819 units, representing a 19.5% decrease from the previous year. This marks the first time that SUV sales have surpassed sedan sales in the January to April period in the imported car market.

In terms of annual sales figures, sedans have consistently outsold SUVs. Last year, imported sedan sales totaled 139,978 units, exceeding SUV sales (121,385 units). However, the gap between sedan and SUV sales narrowed from 40,077 units in 2020 to 10,593 units in 2023. With SUV sales surpassing sedans in April of this year, it is noteworthy whether this trend will continue for the annual sales figures.

The best-selling imported SUV model from January to April was the Tesla Model Y, with 6,016 units sold. This was followed by the BMW X3 with 1,425 units and the BMW X4 with 1,193 units. Last year, the rankings were BMW X4 (2,090 units), BMW X3 (1,917 units), and Model Y (1,120 units).
