[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Minyoung] With mobile carriers around the world entering the generative AI business, Softbank, a Japanese telecommunications company, will invest an additional 150 billion yen (about 1.337 trillion won) by next year to develop high-performance generative AI.

According to foreign media including the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikei) on the 22nd, Softbank invested 20 billion yen (about 178 billion won) to lay the foundation for calculation facilities needed for generative AI development last year, and will invest a large amount equivalent to the existing amount of investment by next year. We focus on producing the world's best models at a level similar to that of open AI's ChatGPT-4.

Softbank is developing a large language model (LLM), an generative AI-based technology, and will complete a 390 billion parameter model in March next year and start developing a 1 trillion parameter model specialized in Japanese after April next year.

Softbank also joined hands with Microsoft (MS) this month to launch a project to optimize call center operations with generative AI. It is intended to expand and introduce generative AI into its work.

Meanwhile, German market research firm Statista predicted that Japan's generative AI market will reach $ 13 billion (about 18 trillion won) by 2030, up 17 times from the previous year.
