[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan shipyard, where the worker's death occurred, was partially discontinued on the 13th. Labor authorities have suspended work and are investigating whether it violates the Serious Accident Punishment Act.

Earlier, a worker A in his 60s was killed and a worker B in his 50s was injured at a marine plant at the Ulsan shipyard at around 6:50 p.m. on the 12th, the last day of the Lunar New Year holiday.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries estimated that the accident occurred when some of the structures sank while moving the upper facilities of the Floating Crude Oil Production Facility (FPS), a 9,000-ton marine structure. Mr. A and Mr. B are employees of an overseas company that specializes in moving heavy goods under contract with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor has ordered HD Hyundai Heavy Industries block-related processes to stop work and is checking whether they violate the Serious Accident Punishment Act.

The major disaster solution is to impose up to one year in prison or fines of up to 1 billion won on employers or managers and up to 5 billion won on corporations if workers die in safety accidents. If a worker is injured or sick, the employer or management manager will be sentenced to up to seven years in prison or fined up to 100 million won.

This is not the first serious accident of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. In April 2022, one worker was killed in an explosion while working at a panel factory in Ulsan shipyard (cutting iron plates and welding). In January of the same year, a worker who was working on a crane at the processing site (2 yards) was caught in an iron plate and died.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is making efforts to prepare safety measures and top safety management to eradicate serious disasters. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, which had not had a single serious accident last year, set its safety goal in January to achieve 1,000 days without serious accidents.
