[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Korean Air has been fined 180 billion won (approximately $1.3 million) by Russian customs authorities.

As of today (14th), industry sources report that Korean Air recently lost a lawsuit against Russian customs. The Supreme Court of Russia upheld the lower court's ruling, which mandated that Korean Air pay a fine of 4.15 billion rubles (about 580 million won) imposed by the Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport customs at the end of last month.

Previously, the Moscow airport customs had fined Korean Air 8.3 billion rubles (approximately 1.16 billion won) after the airline's cargo plane departed without customs clearance in 2022.

Korean Air claimed the fine was excessive and filed an administrative lawsuit in the Moscow Commercial Court, which resulted in a lower court ruling last July that reduced the fine to 4.15 billion rubles, a 50% reduction.

Despite this, Korean Air continued to contest the large fine, filing multiple appeals and challenges, but the Russian Supreme Court upheld the initial ruling.

Additionally, Korean Air received an extra fine of 8.3 billion rubles (approximately 1.16 billion won) from the Sheremetyevo Airport customs in February this year. This additional fine was imposed due to Korean Air's failure to pay the original fine assessed in 2022.
