[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Kim Beom-su, founder of Kakao and head of the Future Initiative Center, has recently undergone a second surgery due to a recurrence of cancer, according to sources in the IT industry on July 18.

A Kakao spokesperson confirmed the news, stating, “It is true that Mr. Kim recently had additional surgery. He is not in critical condition but is focusing on recovery and intensive treatment.”

Earlier this year in March, Kim stepped down from his role as co-chair of Kakao’s highest decision-making body, the CA (Corporate Alignment) Council, citing health concerns. He also concluded his involvement in the company’s Management Reform Committee.

Kim is currently facing legal proceedings related to alleged stock price manipulation during the 2023 SM Entertainment acquisition battle. Prosecutors claim that Kim intervened in the public tender offer by fixing SM's share price higher than the bid. He was arrested in July last year and released after 100 days. He is now on trial without detention, although his court attendance has been intermittent due to health issues.

Meanwhile, the special prosecutor's team, investigating the so-called “Butler Gate” scandal, announced plans to summon Ryu Geung-seon, CEO of Kakao Mobility, for questioning. Special Prosecutor Oh Jung-hee stated during a regular briefing that Ryu is scheduled to appear on Monday, July 21, at 10 a.m.

Previously, the team also notified Kim Beom-su to appear as a witness for questioning on the morning of July 17.
