[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has officially joined the facility upgrade project for the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 in Romania. This marks a significant step as the Korean nuclear industry continues to expand its position as a major supplier in the global market, including Europe.

On December 19, KHNP announced that it had signed the final contract for the upgrade project with the Romanian Nuclear Power Corporation (SNN) in Bucharest. The project is a response to the expiration of the operating license for Unit 1 of the Cernavoda plant, which uses a CANDU-type heavy water reactor, similar to the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant in Korea, in 2026. SNN issued the project to extend the operational life of Unit 1 by an additional 30 years, with a project scale estimated at approximately 2.8 trillion KRW. KHNP will participate as the main contractor in a tripartite consortium with Canada’s CANDU Energy and Italy’s Ansaldo Nuclear. The construction work is scheduled to start in February 2025 and will take about 65 months to complete.

KHNP will oversee the overall construction, including the replacement of major equipment and the building of essential infrastructure such as radioactive waste storage facilities. KHNP’s portion of the contract is valued at about 1.2 trillion KRW. It will collaborate with Doosan Energy Solutions, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Samsung C&T for the construction and building aspects. CANDU Energy, the original supplier of the reactor, will handle the reactor systems, while Ansaldo Nuclear will manage the turbine and generator systems, including design and equipment procurement.
