[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Beijing, September 15, 2025 — The Chinese government announced that it will conduct an additional investigation into potential violations of antitrust laws by NVIDIA related to its acquisition of semiconductor company Mellanox.



The State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) said on its official social media account on the 15th, “Preliminary findings indicate that NVIDIA has violated the ‘Anti-Monopoly Law of the People’s Republic of China’ as well as the ‘Conditional Approval Decision on NVIDIA’s Acquisition of Mellanox Shares’ issued by SAMR. Accordingly, we have decided to initiate further investigation in accordance with the law.”



NVIDIA completed its $6.9 billion acquisition of Israel-based semiconductor firm Mellanox in 2019, with Chinese regulators approving the merger subject to certain conditions. Among these conditions was the requirement that NVIDIA continue supplying GPU accelerators, Mellanox’s high-speed networking interconnect equipment, and related software and accessories to the Chinese market.



However, NVIDIA later suspended shipments of GPU accelerators to China, citing U.S. export control measures. In response, Chinese authorities launched an antitrust investigation into NVIDIA in December 2024.



The latest announcement follows heightened trade tensions between the U.S. and China. On September 12 (local time), the U.S. Department of Commerce added 23 Chinese companies to its sanctions list, while China’s Ministry of Commerce retaliated by launching an anti-dumping investigation into U.S.-made analog semiconductors.
